With the tail end in your left hand, loop over the long end of the yarn to create an X

Don't be afraid to create.

The Slip Knot

Lay the long end of yarn below the loop.

Feed the long end of yarn through the loop and pull it out with your hook or right hand.

Pull the long end loop until a small knot forms.

And there you have a Slip Knot!

The Chain Stitch

Bring the yarn over the hook from the back to the front. 

Pull the hooked yarn through the starting loop.

Continue to hook yarn and pull through until you reach the desired length
